The oldest and largest regional art gallery in Australia, the Art Gallery of Ballarat was founded in 1884 and is housed in a Heritage-listed building. Its exceptional permanent collection presents the history of Australian art from colonial through to contemporary works. Recent acquisitions have expanded the modern sculpture collection and opened up to include Indigenous art from the Top End. In 2017, attractions include the Guirguis New Art Prize 2017 and Romancing the Skull, a celebration of the use of the Death’s Head in art, from medieval times to the tattoo parlour, and including a celebration of the Mexican Day of the Dead. The gallery is open daily from 10am to 5pm and admission is free, excluding some special exhibitions.
