Melbourne is blessed with a slew of impressive pizza joints. D.O.C., For the Love of Pizza, Pizza Meine Liebe, Rococo’s, I Carusi, you name it, you could most probably rattle off dozens more, but there’s just something extra special and authentic about Northcote’s January 2014 opened Perri. Run by owner Joe Perri who’s always front and centre greeting you with a warm embrace when you enter off bustling St Georges Road, big Joe has the ability to sum up what you need before you’ve even ordered. And with the offering of pizza on the table, every choice will transport you to a romantic Naples eatery.

The pizza is simply layered, dotted and brushed across thin dough with delectable ingredients (vegetables from Perri’s garden) kept minimal, allowing the authenticity of the pizza itself to shine. Made fresh from their wood-fired ovens, the SALSICCIA E FRIARIELLI – fior di latte, italian sausages, broccoli rabe and smoked scamorza cheese, and the WALTER STYLE spread with san marzano tomato, italian pancetta, secret mix of italian herbs and cheese are immense in flavour, like all of the them really… there is no such thing as a run-of-the-mill pizza here. Being Italian they also specialise in Arancini for entrees, gelato for sweets, the tiramisu is a must-eat, as is the vanilla panna cotta served with chilli chocolate. Amazing place this one.
